What is "Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract"?

Actually, the INCI was conceived to help consumers.

Yet botanical knowledge and English language skills for non-native speakers are required to understand the above-mentioned term. Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract stands for the extract gained from the fruits of the African sausage tree. The fruits of the tree that grows up 10 to 15 m tall weigh about 5 to 7 kg and have already been used in a mashed form in traditional medicine in order to treat and tighten the breast and décolleté area. Based on this experience, extracts have been developed for the use as cosmetic ingredients.

Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract includes the following substances, among others:

  • Flavones are polyphenols with anti-oxidative effects. Luteolin and 6-hydroxy luteolin as well as their glucosides, in other words flavones bound to glucose, are characteristic for the extract. An additional component is quercetin. Flavones stabilize and tone the superficial capillary blood vessels and the connective tissue.
  • Steroidal saponins and their aglycones such as ruscogenin also have a tightening effect on the connective tissue. These substances also are characteristic ingredients of butcher's broom extracts - and have the same effect.
  • Phytosterols such as stigmasterol and ß-sitosterol stabilize the skin barrier analogous to the human cholesterol.

Kigelia extracts are used for the care of the skin around the eye area and the décolleté.
